Gulf Harbour School

Board of Trustees

Tony Naidu

Tony Naidu I have been on the Board of Trustees for Gulf Harbour School (GHS) since 2013. Contributing to GHS combines two of my passions, education and my children. My daughter went to GHS as her only primary school, before graduating to Whangaparaoa College for Year 7 in 2016, and my two sons remain at GHS.

During my time on the Board, I am proud of our achievements, highlighted by:

  • Board approval for a GHS School Hall to be built, along with significant steps towards achieving this goal, including concept plans being drawn and preliminary plans budgeted for.
  • Real engagement with Maori culture, including GHS having its first Powhiri.
  • Successful relaunch of the PTA and two successful Gala’s run by the PTA.
  • Improved donation contributions due to increased promotion directed by the Board.
  • Sound financial position, without compromising educational goals.
  • Increased strength of the Board as a voice for the community at the school that has resulted in increased accountability for school leadership. This has been made possible through strong leadership within the Board under the direction of Neille Bonner as Chair.
  • New school leadership structure with two Deputy Principals, one for each major section of the school.
While we have made progress, there is still more to be done. There are several key areas that I personally will advocate for:
  • Higher learning outcomes for all learners as measured by National Standards. I would like to see our school as an academic achievement leader.
  • Greater accountability for leadership that pushes GHS to higher achievement.
  • Being an employer of choice for leading teachers.
  • Adoption of meaningful healthy food and drink policies across the school.
  • 100% participation in donations from all families, which means that every family contributes in some way, even if it isn’t the total donation amount asked for. I will advocate for a significant portion of the extra contributions being used to build our school hall.
  • Significant improvement of all communications from the school.
GHS can be the leading school in the region, where our children that graduate Year 6 are prepared to excel at Year 7 and beyond. I will continue to be an active board member, who asks tough questions, and pushes others to dream bigger.
